BULLFROG 2004
A Little History
Starting out as a rhythm section (bass, drums, guitar, turntable) led by singer song-writer Robertson, Bullfrog has evolved over the years refining their sound and style. The core of the band, Mark Robertson, Peter Santiago and Eric San (aka Kid Koala) have been working together since ’94. Initially averaging over 100 shows a year in the Montreal-Toronto area they soon became a club favorite. Appearing at the Montreal Jazz Festival in ’96 along with an opening slot for Maceo Parker helped change the profile of the band. Since, they released 2 independent Ep’s, recorded for Kid Koala’s “Carpal Tunnel Syndrome” (Ninja Tune) and toured the “Meals on Wheels of Steel” World Tour 2000. In 2001 they released their self titled debut Lp on Ropeadope records and headlined tours across North America and Europe playing high profile festivals and logging 200 shows a year.Since it’s inception the band has always featured outstanding musicians in it’s line-up and the current roster is no exception. The tour for their new EP release “Deeper Shade of Green” includes Robertson on vocals, guitar, bass-pedals, Santiago on bass, sometimes drums, and San on turntables. This time they are teamed up with another long-time collaborator Ian Babb on saxophone and flute and Gutierrez, drummer-percussionist from Salvador de Bahia, Brazil.
The New Release
Is this Part III of the Bullfrog EP series or Robertson’s first? Either way “Deeper Shade of Green” is ready to go and in Canadian stores June 22nd or available on-line at www.tunevault.com. The color is Green, the voice dark blue, introspective, optimistic, sometimes subversive, always melodic and fun. The music deeper still; rootsy, lo-fi pop, bumping bass, funk guitar, often quiet and intimate. With deeper song writing, pop and R’n’B sensibilities and the subtle production and turntable skills of Kid Koala, the songs melt in your ears and run down your spine making the new sound cerebral and physical.Reviews
