“The moral is, if you’ve never heard of Kid Koala, this is Bullfrog, you’ll like them. If you have heard of Kid Koala, forget he’s in the band. This is Bullfrog, you’ll like them.”

Bullfrog featuring Kid Koala Bullfrog (Ropeadope)
Thanks to his membership in the cartoon supergroup Gorillaz and a support slot on Radiohead's summer tour, turntable wiz Eric "Kid Koala" San is gaining some new, and deserved, recognition. Which means it's finally time to roll out a full-length disc by one of Koala's longest-running projects, Bullfrog. The Montreal-based sextet has been together since 1994, but up till now its only put out a couple of EPs. Our loss, judging by the good-humored funkiness that infuses every track here. As usual, Koala shows off some slick moves, scratching out a spooky flute melody on "Snakeskin" and an appropriately croak-like synth line on "Bullfrog Theme." But he's not the only talented guy in this outfit. Singer/guitarist Mark Robertson taps into the Prince/Sly/P-Funk zone with ease. Loose-limbed drummer Massimo Sansalone makes every groove infectious. And rapper James Sobers, a.k.a. BluRum 13, lays down hilarious rhymes on "Nice Try" and "Reverse Psychology" (the hook line of which is, naturally, "Y-G-O-L-O-H-C-Y-S-P"). Healthy amphibian fun for all.
